NANTIA is the training and consultancy division of Quality Maritime Surveyors (QMS) - the incumbent NDT provider for critical work on Collins Class submarine availabilities. We train technicians to be boat-ready, provide Level III ASNT services, and consult on the standards that matter to both Australian and US naval programs.
Quality Maritime Surveyors (QMS) has spent 15 years delivering NDT, inspection, and tank refurbishment services on Australia's Collins Class submarine fleet. As the incumbent NDT provider for critical work during major docking availabilities, QMS identified a fundamental problem: traditional multi-trade sequencing created unnecessary delays.
QMS solved this by training individual technicians to perform coating assessment, coating removal, corrosion removal, and NDT within a single work chain. The result was a step-change in how submarine maintenance was executed.
NANTIA - meaning "of the sea" in Greek - is the training division born from that operational experience. We deliver non-destructive testing training based on real naval platform requirements, not generic syllabi.
Located at the doorstep of the Osborne Naval Precinct in Adelaide, South Australia, NANTIA's training facility puts students where the work is - reducing the gap between qualification and operational readiness for Australian defence programs.
Non-destructive testing training current to the standards that Australian and US naval programs require.
NANTIA delivers structured NDT training built around the standards that Australian and US naval programs actually require. Our curriculum is current to ASNT SNT-TC-1A and NAVSEA requirements, with ISO 9712-compliant training available for organisations requiring international certification pathways.
NANTIA is in the final stages of becoming an AINDT Authorised Qualifying Body (AQB), enabling formal qualification and certification of NDT personnel to ISO 9712 directly through our training programs.
Training pathways include boat readiness, naval architecture terminology, and defect recognition for naval materials - going well beyond standard certification syllabi.
Structured pathways from new entrant through to Level II, designed to produce NDT technicians who are genuinely ready for naval and industrial platforms.
Ongoing training aligned to requalification cycles and evolving program requirements across SNT-TC-1A, NAVSEA, and ISO 9712.
Expanding existing technician capability into additional NDT methods or standards frameworks to meet broadening defence program demands.
Supplementary training covering naval architecture terminology, material behaviour, confined-space awareness, and the practical realities of working on a submarine.
NANTIA provides qualified ASNT Level III services across all major NDT methods. Level III is the highest level of NDT personnel qualification and is responsible for the technical adequacy of procedures, the training and examination of Level I and II personnel, and the interpretation of codes and standards.
As Australian naval programs demand increased alignment with US standards, the need for qualified, independent Level III oversight is growing. Many Australian organisations have capable NDT personnel but lack the formal Level III governance structure that US customers and programs expect.
NANTIA provides this directly - whether as ongoing retained Level III oversight, project-specific NDT consulting support, or a structured path to building your own internal Level III capability.
NANTIA is positioned as a US-requirements expert for Australian organisations entering the US defence supply chain.
For Australian manufacturers, fabricators, and NDT providers wanting to supply parts or services to US naval contracts, the path involves more than technical capability. It requires structured compliance across cybersecurity, export controls, vendor registration, and manufacturing standards specific to the US defence ecosystem.
NANTIA's defence supply chain uplift consultancy covers this full pathway - from understanding what's required, through to implementation and audit readiness.
NANTIA's training is primarily delivered face-to-face at our facility near the Osborne Naval Precinct in Adelaide. For organisations with distributed workforces or pre-training assessment needs, our programs are complemented by a structured online LMS and VR NDT simulation environment.
Structured non-destructive testing training aligned to SNT-TC-1A, NAVSEA, and ISO 9712. Face-to-face, online LMS, and VR simulation pathways for entry-level through to advanced qualification.
