A practical starting point

NDT training.
Certification.
Your next step.

They are connected, but they are different. Understand the pathway before choosing a course.

Start with the work you want to do.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) uses inspection methods to assess materials or components without destroying their usefulness. Different methods address different inspection needs. Ultrasonic testing, for example, is used in weld inspection and thickness measurement; penetrant and magnetic particle methods address particular types of surface inspection.

Choose a method, level and sector that fit your intended work. Your employer or a technical adviser can help identify the relevant requirements.

Training is part of the pathway.

ISO 9712 concerns qualification and certification of NDT personnel. Training develops knowledge and practical understanding; it does not by itself confer certification. The applicable certification scheme sets requirements that can include training, industrial experience, vision and examinations.

The details depend on the method, level, sector and scheme. Refer to the certification body’s current guidance and confirm your own requirements before booking. For Australian pathways, the AINDT NDT certification information is a useful starting point.

Five questions to ask before booking.

  1. Does the course cover the method, level and sector I need?
  2. What prior training or experience do I need?
  3. How are practical training and examinations arranged?
  4. What is included in the course fee, and what is separate?
  5. What evidence will I need for a certification application?
